Hurt Locker which earned less than 2% of Avatar’s box collection, won six Oscars compared to three by Avatar. Avatar was a movie based on the theme of human greed which could someday make the environment unlivable. On the contrary, Hurt Locker was a movie based on Iraq, bombs and army. Avatar was one of the biggest 3D movies ever made and it has revolutionized the way movies are made. Every screen of this movie is made using sophisticated technologies many of which was specially designed for this movie. Reviews all over the world indicated that Avatar will rule the Oscars but the result has disappointed many movie buffs all over the world, especially from the developing nations. People in these countries could relate to Pandora more than the bomb diffusion. Although Hurt Locker was more practical, people in developing nations prefer environment.

“Ye haath mujhe de de Thakur”, is one of the many famous dialogue of this movie. It is said that the film industry of India is categorized as pre Sholey and post Sholey. The book written by Anupama Chopra is crispy and covers even the finest details about the movie from concept to release. The author has penned down even the details like how the name of the characters ‘Gabbar’, ‘viru’ & ‘Jai’ evolved. It also covered the problems faced by the movie because of the censor board. It revealed that the story had a different ending, in which Gabbar was to be killed brutally by Thakur. Alas! it was changed on the request of the censor boards just two months before the release date of the evangelical brand Sholey.
This movie was the first Indian movie to be released in a 70mm format instead of the traditional 35mm. It was the biggest budget movie during the 70s with a budget of 1 crore rupees (which went upto 3 crores). This movie was the first to use its character ‘Gabbar’ to promote products like Britannia biscuits. The movie was the first Indian movie to give real credit to the script writers like Salim-Javed. However, such revolutionary initiatives attracted lot of discomfort in the entire film industry but this did not stop the Sippys from hiring the best talent for their dream project.
This movie also experimented with some marketing innovations by releasing the movie in both the 35mm and the 70mm format. It was the first movie to sell the music rights and also the first to release the only dialogue version in large scale. In the first week of the release the movie was not received well by the audience. The entire team went into depression but instead of losing hope went around to find the root cause of the problem. During this post release analysis they found that the viewers actually were lost in the movie and they did not even went out during the intervals. This review from a theater owner changed the way the movie was perceived. As a result this movie bounced back as one of the biggest hits of the time. A Super Duper hit, what we call in India.

Avatar – Who would have ever imagined such a concept?A fantasy to the core adorned by sci-fi of the genetic engineering idea.Who could believe that James Cameron had waited with the script, language and Pandora culture since 1994?The reason being that technology was not so advanced at that time to give justice to his avid imagination.

The idea portrayed in Avatar seems still fresh and vivid.Hats off to James Cameron, for his visionary excellence. The indigenous humanoids in Pandora are so neatly detailed that you would want to be one of them. You would fantasize yourself riding on the horses and giant birds. The culture immensely rich, you will envy not being a part of it. Somehow, I felt it resembled to other animation brilliance “Ferngully- the Last Rainforest”. The visualization of forest is very similar. The idea about the Tree of souls – the whole Pandora ecology connected to each other, like all chips on a motherboard, like neurons of the brain, seems extremely fascinating.

Talking about the money, Avatar‘s budget exceeded US $500 million, and has already earned US$1 billion and still grossing.I always think that India needs such visionaries to tap the potential of innovative minds in India, and come up with the Made in India – masterpiece.

The challenge lying ahead of India is producers lacking the faith in ideas. Less awareness about multimedia and insecurity to pursue this non-conventional career prospect has made it more difficult. Still, I would say Sahara One’s Hanuman (INR 40 million budgeted) has made a mark in the whole world, highlighting the potential in Indian animators.

I just hope Animation Industry flourishes in India like the IT industry.

Within days of the release, the movie has created a box office history and is being rated as one of the top movies of the decade, collecting close to Rs 175 crore.

The movie is based on the theme of the famous book by Chetan Bhagat- Five Point Someone.

Chetan Bhagat claims that he has not been given due credit for the movie by mentioning his name at the end of the movie , thus making sure that a large percentage of the audience would surely miss seeing it.

Aamir spoke against Chetan stating that he believes that Chetan is trying to take the credit away from the people who have worked on the scripts. He believes that Abhijat, the film writer, who has worked on the script for the last three years should be given credit for the movie.

Aamir states that Chetan Bhagat had once himself admitted that the film was very different from the book and that the success of the film has provoked Bhagat to try a stunt at gaining some publicity for himself.

Aamir also confessed that though Abhijat had taken the idea from Chetan’s book, Abhijat had in fact changed the script entirely.

Amazingly crafted simple but very strong story by Aamir Khan… The movie is a rebuff on the whole Indian education system and the society which regards Doctors, Engineers, etc. as demigods and artists, poets’ profession as futile wastage of time. True, money is an important aspect no doubts but the former mentioned careers are not the only way to success and fame. Just because these are ‘safe careers’ who wants to venture on something new or take a risk of encouraging one’s child to become a painter? In the rat race for clinging on to anything which brings money, we have actually forgotten that to love the thing you do, you have to listen to your heart and not mind. This realization does come. Sometimes luckily sooner, sometimes unfortunately later.

The movie’s first part beautifully potrays the child’s longing for freedom from mundane and marks based education. The scenes showing his agony as a dejected child truly stirs your heart and numbs your mind… Aamir’s entry and his conversations with Champ’s dad are very well written… The climax though predictable is so beautifully picturized, especially the scene in which Champ is declared as winner and he is not even able to get up to collect prize as he has seen accolades first time in his life!

Power packed performances by the child, aamir and beautiful songs made this movie worth nominating for an oscar…

The message behind the movie is quiet intense. Truly captured in the title song: ‘Kho na jaye yeh taare zameen par’. Truly a child is like a small bud, unaware of the exernal world. Are such beautiful creative beings not deserving enough to be given freedom to do what they like in this world? Instead of having countless unsatisfied souls in few eclectic professions, shouldn’t the society be made of several satisfied and most importantly happy and free souls in all fields?

I don’t know why but there is a strange sense of simplicity in Nagesh kukoonoor’s movies. Everytime I see any of his movies, it puts a smile on my face and hope in my heart.

I saw his movie Dor. Beautifully cinematographed, it really captures the essence of my native place -Rajasthan. I honestly felt like going there after watching the movie. Though there are beautifully captured scenes from Kashmir too but the movie is more centralized on desert motif. There is one good dialogue in the movie saying Rajasthan has its own enigmatic beauty in scorching heat and barren lands.

Movie starts off slowly but gets going when Gul reaches Rajasthan in search of Ayesha Takia. The character of Shreyas is well crafted but the real show stealer was Ayesha. I seriously couldn’t imagine anyone else in that simple yet so strong role. There were some real good scenes, the best scene was obviously when Ayesha gives the mafinama to Gul with a smile on her face.

The director has beautifully elicited out great performances from all of the actors. Indian cinema is truly now heading towards maturity and depth in stories with such kind of movies.

The beer market in India is growing at more than 12% per annum! Who is driving this growth? Young Indians loaded with high disposable income are the backbone of the beer market in India.

The U.S. beer market has changed dramatically over decades. Earlier the beer market was run by Macro Brewers like Lager beers. Beer was sold in truck loads almost like commodities. Then in 1990s came the second generation which invloved micro brewers. High quality Ales, Stouts and porters. Now the US market has lived up to their expectations by changing the beer market dynamics once again. The US market is now shifting towards the specialty beer segment, craft beer. These beer are produced in modest quantities and sold at ultrapremium price. These beer brands are more like wine with alcohol contents upto 18%. They provide the experience of exclusivity and variety that has long appealed to oenophiles. With combined sales of $3.7 billion, they represent 3.2% of the US beer market.

Where is Indian beer market compared to the US market?

The Indian beer market started with Indian Pale Ale and now thriving on macro brewers. Major players like UB, SAB, and other foriegn players still live on Lager beer. Lately, many special beer like Belgiun Beer and stout beer have entered the market. Giving signs of the changing beer market in India. The constrain to these beer is the availability. These brands are marketed only in some big retail outlets which are present only in few cities of India. To reach the majority of the population the perception of the people have to evolve. The Ban of Promotion of alcoholic drinks in India is another constrain. Promotion of a beer brand in India is really difficult. Another constrain is the complex State tax structure, which makes the pricing strategy of beer to change with states. e.g. New Delhi and Goa charge lower tax compared to Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. It seems that India is still between the Micro and Macro Brewer stage.

However, looking at the recent infiltration of foriegn beer brands in India, the Indian Beer market tends to be changing. Lets hope to get a Fort beer in a year or so, at a remote place like Nagothane, India.

How powerful can a person be? Or How sustainable are the financial explosions?

The world economy is like a fire which when uncontrolled can create havoc. A well controlled fire can run an engine, spread peace, provide light or cook food but if uncontrolled can gulp in the safest buildings like World Trade Centre or cause distructions like bombs. What is similar between the trend of world economy and fire?

The world economy is seen to follow a smooth curve unless something like a bomb disturbs it. The bomb fuels the economy tremendously, after which there is a sudden dip in economy as if the economy is lacking fuel.

The unusual and mild recession of 1926-27 is thought to be caused by the closure of Ford plants in America. This was done for a period of 6 months to change the production from Model T to the Model A. In this case the fire was closure of plant and the cause was a person called Henry Ford! Though it is not considered to be a fraud.

The famous movie ‘Catch me If you Can’, based on a real story, describes very beautifully the meaning of fraud and fraudsters. Mr. Abagnale Jr. is known as one of the most notorious fraudsters of all time. He used to print his own cheques in the name of U.S Defence and costed the US govt. $ 2.5 million in 1960. The effect of this fraud was not much on the economy but it made the entire banking industry to ravamp the cash dispersal system. The banking industry seemed to be satisfied with the system until a bomb like fraud shook them!

Lets talk about the accounting frauds like Enron and Satyam. These frauds were of the tune of billions of dollars. Mr. Kenneth Lay and Mr. Raju the heads of the respective organizations ingited the fire which bombed such huge organisations. The aftermaths of which have helped in pushing further down the suffering economy.

Do these Lords of the Frauds really help the world in improving on the prevelant systems and culture? After every explosion of such events the world reorganises to prevent such explosions and still we have bubble bursts, dotcom burst, great depression etc.. Tyco, Dreier, Worldcom and Madoff have proved this recurrent nature of financial bombs for the betterment of the society.

The question is when will this end? Or will there be a sheild strong enough to lessen the effects of such explosions?

Rogues

I am here to ask a few questions,
So where do you see yourself five years from now.

I will tell you what I see,
I see you spending days and nights at work,
Staying away from your loved ones,
Ignoring them as they wait
Wait for you to come home,
A wait that ends with nights of loneliness
Spent away as you work.

You live a life exploiting yourself,
Leave alone exploiting others,
Forgetting the very reason why you live.
Is it to earn millions?
Is it to complete a deadline on time?
To work, and work and just work?

Is this the life you asked the almighty for,
A life with no time for others
A life where you leave everyone behind,

No time to celebrate a family tradition,
No time to mourn the loss of a loved one
With a fake smile on your face,

Too occupied in deadlines and releases,
You have become a slave of your own greed,
A greed which forces you to treat people the way you treat yourself,
Without love, Without Sympathy,
Without affection.

It doesn’t matter if you miss a family function,
But you would never miss a deadline

Life is much more my friend,
How can you life with yourself,
How can you not feel guilty?
You can fix the mistakes you made at work,
But would you be able to mend all the hearts you broke.

So five years from now,
Would you be a lonely soul?
Who has made up millions of bucks?
But lost millions of relationships.
Or would you learn to love, to care, to “Live”
