Cnet TechTracker -Auto Update all Softwares for Windows and Mac

Cnet TechTracker is a freeware that scans the computer and provides the list of all the softwares that are outdated. Whats even cooler is that it lets you download the update automatically.

Sounds cool doesn’t it. But here’s the catch. You need to be connected to the internet while TechTracker scans your system and displays the results in a web page. Secondly, the search result is only available to the registered user, so dont forget to register on cnet.com in case you would like to get the full functionality of TechTracker.

Another thumbs down for this product is the fact that it doesn’t allow a user to upgrade all the softwares to the latest version but rather lets you download the latest software executable file. So you might end up downloading 10Mb application whereas the update was hardly a few MB’s.

Having said that, its a cool app to know which all applications have a newer version online with just a click of a button rather than manually checking for each software.

Microsoft Adorns Social Outlook

Microsoft, one of the largest software companies of the world with revenues of $ 58 billion in 2009, is planning to make its outlook software more social. It was revealed by group product manager Dev Balasubramaniam through a video posted on their website. It is said that Outlook 2010 will allow us to interact with the leading social networking sites like Facebook, LinkedIn and MySpace. This will give the mailing software a substantial competitive advantage over other mailing softwares. The only problem which they may face is the up gradation of current customers of lower version of outlook to the Outlook 2010. However, this innovative product will help them launch themselves in the huge market of social networking.
The timing of the announcement might help Microsoft take advantage over the controversies over privacy to Google Buzz users.

Enterprise Resource Planning or better known as ERP has been the key IT Buzz since a decade now.Today every big company either has it or aspires to buy it. Why not? It is such a wonderful system that pressurizes the organization to adopt the benchmarked business processes. SAP being the leader in providing ERP packages, has gone through the entire business cycle and has developed key innovations. Considering the fact that small companies cannot implement ERP (because of the huge costs associated with it), cloud computing

is here again to help the resource scarce organizations. Today ERP can be implemented in two ways. One: In-House ERP software (traditional way) and Two: Through Application service providers (Cloud Computing way)

ASPs are organizations which rent ERP software to small companies. They have a central server which can be accessed through internet by the users. They also provide necessary training to the users. Usually they charge on per user basis or the number of transactions. On the other hand in traditional in-house ERP model, everything has to be bought and paid for by the user organization as shown in the diagram shown above.

Now the question arises, which one is better. There are three things (FIS) which should be considered before taking this crucial decision. One: Financial resources of the company, Two: IT expertise available in-house and Three: Strategic evaluation looking at your competitors.

One: Finance: It is seen that ASP supported ERP is almost 30% cheaper than the ownership model(over 5 years). However, your companies information lies at the ASP servers.

Two: IT expertise: A company which does not have strong IT infrastructure in the organization may spend a lot more in developing the expertise. The in-house model might also take a lot more time to implement ERP. Here the ASP model might be beneficial, because the risk associated with unsuccessful implementation is fraction of the former.

Three: Strategic Evaluation: If the concerned industry/competitor is growing fast and your forecast says that investment in infrastructure is key to sustainable growth of your organization, do not worry about the costs. Go for the traditional proprietary model of ERP implementation.

To sum up, now even a small company can reap the benefits of business process re engineering or the God like ERP!

How to prevent your PEN drive from VIRUS

Friends many of your PC/laptop’s normally gets virus because of Pen Drives or USB devices (Even PC’s who are not connected to network ). Some Virus like Ravmon Virus , Heap41a worm which are not detected by anti virus normally spreads mostly by the Pen Drives . In such a case what can you do to prevent your PC from getting infected with Virus that spreads through USB devices or Pen Drives ?

You can protect your PC by just following the simple steps below . It won’t take much time.

Connect your Pen Drive or USB drive to your computer .

Now a dialogue window will popup asking you to choose among the options as shown in the

figure.

Don’t choose any of them , Just simply click Cancel.

*Now go to Start–> Run and type cmd to open the Command Prompt window ..
*Now go to My Computer and Check the Drive letter of your USB drive or Pen Drive. ( E.g. If it is written Kingston (I:) , then I: will be the drive letter ..)
*In the Command Window ( cmd ) , type the drive letter: and Hit Enter ..
*Now type dir/w/o/a/p and Hit Enter
*You will get a list of files . In the list , search if anyone of the following do exist
1. Autorun.inf
2. New Folder.exe
3. Bha.vbs
4. Iexplore.vbs
5. Info.exe
6. New_Folder.exe
7. Ravmon.exe
8. RVHost.exe or any other files with .exe Extension .
If you find any one of the files above , Run the command attrib -h -r -s -a *.* and Hit Enter.
Now Delete each File using the following Command del filename ( E.g del autorun.inf ) .
That’s it . Now just scan your USB drive with the anti virus you have to ensure that you made your Pen Drive free of Virus .

if there is a folder named heap41a, then ur system is infected…

Vista Tweaks – Speed up your Vista’s Performance

Do you want to speed up your Vista? Is it eating up a lot of your System’s memory and are just kicking yourself and thinking “Why did you ever install Vista”. Are you one of those people who are having performance issues with Vista ? Now here are some cool tweaks to help you improve the performance of Microsoft Vista. And you don’t have to be a rocket scientist to do that. Just follow the instructions mentioned below for each category and you would be able to see the difference in no time. Here are some of the features that not many people use in Vista. Yet they eat up a lot of memory. So the easiest solution would be to disable these.

SideBar
The sidebar displays a clock, A Microsoft RSS viewer, and a thumbnail slide show. Removing this can give your PC some more memory to play with.
To remove the Sidebar, right-click on the Sidebar and select Close Sidebar. Uncheck Start Sidebar when Windows starts, and then click OK.

Aero
Aero displays thumbnails of window when you hover the mouse pointer over the taskbar. It also displays the Flip 3D view when you press Windows-Tab. If your PC is running out of memory, you can disable aero features.
Just right-click the Windows desktop and select Personalize, Window Color and Appearance. In the resulting ‘Window Color and Appearance’ dialog box, click Open classic appearance properties for more color options (if you don’t see the option that means Aero is already turned off). Select Windows Vista Basic and click OK.

Internet Printing Client
Now this is one feature you can certainly get rid of as not many people print a file over the internet . Open the ‘Programs and Features’ control panel and click the Turn Windows features on or off link on the left; you’ll get the Windows Features dialog box. Expand the Print Services section and uncheck Internet Printing Client.
Click OK at this point, and then wait for the system to ask to reboot.

Search Indexing
If you don’t use your system to search mp3 and videos or documents very often and don’t mind waiting a few minutes for your search results, this is one feature you can certainly do away with. This will boost your system’s performance. Alternatively you can also use Google desktop for search.
To do this, click on Start, type services, and press Enter. Find and double-click Windows Search. In the ‘Startup type’ drop-down menu, select Disabled, and then click ok.

Offline Files
This feature is not available in Home Edition. This keeps your files synchronized with the server you are connected to. SO if you are using Vista Business and Ultimate and are not connected to any local server, you might as well turn this feature off.
Simply click Start, type services, press Enter. Find and double-click Offline Files. In the ‘Startup type’ drop-down menu, select Disabled, and then click OK.

Windows Error Reporting Service
Now I am sure everyone hates the popup which asks a report to be sent to Microsoft whenever a program crashes. Though hardly would you be instantly benefited from this service. SO might as well turn it off!
To do so, Click Start, type services, and press Enter. Find and double-click Windows Error Reporting Service. In the ‘Startup type’ drop-down menu, select Disabled, and then click OK.
