Some of my friends have recently been asking me about what it takes to create a blog from scratch. This series of articles is intended to share this knowledge of the process of creating your own blog site.
Step1 : Choice between Free domains Vs Buying a domain Name
The first step is to understand whether you would like to enroll for a free blogging site or pay a fee and get additional features. The difference between a free service and paid hosting is obvious. On a free site like blogspot.com your website name would be registered as a sub-domain of the main hosting blogging site. Now does that sound confusing. Allow me to explain .
Eg If you register your website name as “silverlight” on blogspot.com, the website name would be registered as www.silverlight.blogspot.com
Here blogspot.com is the main hosting blogging site. The sub-domain here is silverlight. Thus sub-domain is basically a child of a main hosting domain.
Thus, when you buy a domain, you actually own the parent domain. So your website name would therefore be just www.silverlight.com.
Pros and Cons
The first advantage of owning a domain is pretty obvious. Your website name is smaller and easier to remember.
Secondly the name looks more professional and not just one of the many websites which people create of free sites and forget about.
Third many domain registrars give you free disk space of upto 100MB for email id associated with your domain name.
The disadvantage of a personal domain name is that you need to buy it. For a new domain name which has no resellers, the domain name can be bought at a price as cheap as $5 – $10 for a year.

I was wondering if it is possible to create blog website from scratch. A website on which you could put together and publish blog posts without the support of Blogger, WordPress, or other blog publishing platforms.

This is very encouraging. Honestly I’m one of those people creating a website under sub-domains, I didn’t barely know that using sub-domain is worst than ever.
