Book Review:2 States-the story of my life

The story goes like:
Love marriages around the world are simple:
Boy loves girl. Girl loves boy.
They get married.
In India, there are a few more steps:
Boy loves Girl. Girl loves Boy.
Girl’s family has to love boy. Boy’s family has to love girl.
Girl’s Family has to love Boy’s Family. Boy’s family has to love girl’s family.
Girl and Boy still love each other. They get married.
Chetan’s 2 states is indeed a book which keeps its readers flipping its pages till the end. The story begins with a fight involving the protagonist Krish and Ananya at IIM Ahmedabad. The story moves very fast. This time the main heart of the story is not the IIM environment but the life these 2 of them go convincing their respective parents for the awaited marriage.

The plot: The story revolves around the love affair of Ananya and Krish and the problems they face to convince their parents to agree to an inter caste marriage. The story describes how each family reacts to the news and how they openly disapprove of the marriage. It shows the traditional and mental differences of people of two very different states, Delhi and Chennai and how Ananya and Krish overcome the state differences and finally manage their parents to agree to the marriage.
Chetan Bhagat has done well to stress on the differences that still exist between people of different states and how these differences lead to clashes.  He has also done well to bring to notice the open disapproval of love marriage and especially an inter caste marriage.

Critics: 2 States is an easy read and is not as engrossing as ‘Three Mistakes of my Life’ . It has a usual ending – “A happy ending. I wonder if he could have been more practical and looked at a different ending that to what the readers obviously expected.  I am sure if this was his first novel, this would have turned out to be just another novel which sold a few hundred copies. I feel that its his reputation that would make people buy this book rather than the contents.

Bottomline: A 2.5 out of 5 rating for this book.

Price: Rs.95

I don’t really agree on the point that the book is not as engrossing as Three mistakes of my life…
‘Three mistakes..’ wasn’t this funny and had weirdest climax (Imagine the villain getting beaten by cricket strokes :) ).
The satire in his books is Chetan Bhagat’s forte which he proves again in ’2 states’.
