Smart phone os provider Symbian is now open source

Symbian has completed making the entire source code, of its highly appreciated smart phone operating system, an open source. This move is one of the largest changes in business models towards open source model. Open source are software which can be appended and used by anybody who wishes to do so. This symbian software is valued at more than a billion dollar.
Why have they done it? The foundation says that it will promote innovation and help the platform develop much better applications than what symbian could do alone. However, strategically this move is going to hit the various smart phone manufacturers. This will reduce the entry barrier for new players and would increase the competition in this segment. It is not far when we could see these smart phones in every human being’s hands.
