Hard Drives will soon be available in a new format which might not run with XP. Currently the drives are manufactured in 512 bytes format which will be replaced by the 4k bytes format. The 512 byte format has reached saturation levels. i.e. it is becoming difficult to reduce its size further. Whereas 4k byte format has scope to reduce the size and increase efficiency simultaneously.
Experts in a discussion said that the industry has agreed to phase out the old formats by 2011. Except XP all other new operating systems are likely to support this new format. Some say that this new drive will still be compatible to XP but the data transfer speed might suffer.
I was trying to figure out why this 4k and not more or not less. Is this an incremental innovation strategy to milk the customers or is it the best solution? This move by the hardware industry might reduce the life cycle of technological products further.

Microsoft, one of the largest software companies of the world with revenues of $ 58 billion in 2009, is planning to make its outlook software more social. It was revealed by group product manager Dev Balasubramaniam through a video posted on their website. It is said that Outlook 2010 will allow us to interact with the leading social networking sites like Facebook, LinkedIn and MySpace. This will give the mailing software a substantial competitive advantage over other mailing softwares. The only problem which they may face is the up gradation of current customers of lower version of outlook to the Outlook 2010. However, this innovative product will help them launch themselves in the huge market of social networking.
The timing of the announcement might help Microsoft take advantage over the controversies over privacy to Google Buzz users.

Now you will find Microsoft’s Bing search engine in all yahoo pages! Microsoft’s move to buy Yahoo’s internet search and search advertising business has been cleared. The European Commission ruled that the deal “would not significantly impede effective competition”.
How will this move affect the online search market?
Currently, Google is the market leader and is growing at much higher rate than the industry average. Amidst Google’s controversies in China over security and copyrights Microsoft has launched a soft attack by grabbing the opportunity to grow strong. Microsoft can now promote its technically sound search engine to a better and larger target segment. Together yahoo and Microsoft will now control 10% of the market share which is no where when compared to Google’s 90% market share but access to larger market can be exploited with strong strategic initiatives. Thus, this consolidation is likely to create more value for the customers in the long run.

Steve Jobs is known for creating revolutionary products and launching them like a box office thriller. The movie producers should learn a few tips from him! The launch of IPhone marked a new milestone in the history of tech products. Now, it is the time for IPad. What is IPad? In the last few years, the world has seen that the technological gap between a phone and a computer is reducing. Earlier people were satisfied with a basic phone which can be used to communicate only. Gradually the products’ expected features like internet, WAP and data processing abilities crept into the basic features. However, mobile manufacturers could not break the ice to think further, which Apple has done. Apple is trying to create a new segment where people want a multipurpose mobile device through which all basic needs of a mobile and a computer can be experienced with ease. IPhone implemented this unique ‘Filling the Gap’ strategy successfully. It seems that Apple has made this ‘Filling the Gap’ strategy it’s unique selling proposition. Is it sustainable? The sustainability of a strategy depends on the entry barrier for competitors. If the entry barrier is low then apart from the first mover advantage, Apple will have nothing. It will not be able to milk this newly created segment for a long time. One feature which is valuable about this product is that more than one lakh applets can be accessed through this device. These features are currently used in Iphones and IPad is compatible with it. So, the product is different but the features are developed on a common platform which can be used only on Apple products. It reminds me of the era when Apple tried to rule the market with Macs which could use only Apple’s applications and software. This strategy of Apple decades ago, did not last much because the competitors could sniff it and Microsoft and IBM reaped the benefits. Is it that this time the competitors are not aware or Apple has done its homework well enough. Apple has penetrated deep enough in most of the developed markets with its platform featured products IPhone, iTouch and IPod. Gradually they are moving back towards the PC in terms of features. WOW! Steve Jobs seems to implement his old strategy well enough to reach the levels of Microsoft with huge strategic advantages. Analysts say that IPad will not be able to replace the PC/Laptop market but you do not know what Apple is all for. It will not be surprising if Steve introduces an iPC which will run on the same platform used for iPod, iPhone and iPad.

Business to business marketing is a specialized field of marketing where the rules of the game is substantially different. Transaction between Microsoft and Dell can be compared to transaction between P&G and a consumer John, but to a certain extent. The level of trust and relationship is markedly different in the above two business transactions. The intricacies of trust and relationship in B2B transactions have been discussed in depth in a paper written by Shelby D Hunt. In the past decade there has been a paradigm shift towards relationship marketing and this is more evident in B2B segment. However, at the kirana store level the importance of relationship marketing cannot be neglected in a developing country. It is seen that the importance of this concept varies with the level of development in the society. The more developed a country the less is the importance at B2C level. In emerging nations where the systems are not well defined and where best practices are rare, adjustment and adoption to individual customers is been practiced since decades.

In emerging nations where the systems are not well defined and where best practices are rare, adjustment and adoption to individual customers is been practiced since decades.

With this background information, here i would like to throw some light on an interesting relation between human behavior and relationship marketing. Interaction and transaction among human beings happen at three levels:

one-With family members

Two-with friends

Three-with acquaintance

Let us explore the importance and consequence of relationship in all the three scenarios. At level one, humans compulsorily adopt to the family members needs and change involuntarily. If your wife needs some time, she need not take an appointment from you. At level two, humans adopt to the needs of their friends voluntarily. If your friend wants to meet you, you might change your regular appointment to accommodate your friends need. However, at level three, the chances that you treat the acquaintance differently are very bleak.

Now, let us explore these options for a business house.

level one: Big client without whom you cannot survive. Just like family members.

level Two: key clients whom you perceive to be better than other clients (in terms of business, process or growth prospects). Just like friends.

level Three: other clients

In level one, your client defines the way you work and can be compared to family members.

In level two, there is a mutual adjustment and you act as if they are your friends. You would change your normal business process wherever required.

Interestingly, at level three, you do business with other not so important clients and you act as if they are just acquaintance and you resist any demand in process change.

From the above comparison i conclude that a manager can understand its business better if he handles the clients as if they are family members, friends or just acquaintance.

“Three tier relationship management in business”.

Is it eating up a lot of your System’s memory and are just kicking yourself and thinking “Why did you ever install Vista”. Are you one of those people who are having performance issues with Vista ? Now here are some cool tweaks to help you improve the performance of Microsoft Vista. And you don’t have to be a rocket scientist to do that. Just follow the instructions mentioned below for each category and you would be able to see the difference in no time. Here are some of the features that not many people use in Vista. Yet they eat up a lot of memory. So the easiest solution would be to disable these.

SideBar
The sidebar displays a clock, A Microsoft RSS viewer, and a thumbnail slide show. Removing this can give your PC some more memory to play with.
To remove the Sidebar, right-click on the Sidebar and select Close Sidebar. Uncheck Start Sidebar when Windows starts, and then click OK.

Aero
Aero displays thumbnails of window when you hover the mouse pointer over the taskbar. It also displays the Flip 3D view when you press Windows-Tab. If your PC is running out of memory, you can disable aero features.
Just right-click the Windows desktop and select Personalize, Window Color and Appearance. In the resulting ‘Window Color and Appearance’ dialog box, click Open classic appearance properties for more color options (if you don’t see the option that means Aero is already turned off). Select Windows Vista Basic and click OK.

Internet Printing Client
Now this is one feature you can certainly get rid of as not many people print a file over the internet . Open the ‘Programs and Features’ control panel and click the Turn Windows features on or off link on the left; you’ll get the Windows Features dialog box. Expand the Print Services section and uncheck Internet Printing Client.
Click OK at this point, and then wait for the system to ask to reboot.

Search Indexing
If you don’t use your system to search mp3 and videos or documents very often and don’t mind waiting a few minutes for your search results, this is one feature you can certainly do away with. This will boost your system’s performance. Alternatively you can also use Google desktop for search.
To do this, click on Start, type services, and press Enter. Find and double-click Windows Search. In the ‘Startup type’ drop-down menu, select Disabled, and then click ok.

Offline Files
This feature is not available in Home Edition. This keeps your files synchronized with the server you are connected to. SO if you are using Vista Business and Ultimate and are not connected to any local server, you might as well turn this feature off.
Simply click Start, type services, press Enter. Find and double-click Offline Files. In the ‘Startup type’ drop-down menu, select Disabled, and then click OK.

Windows Error Reporting Service
Now I am sure everyone hates the popup which asks a report to be sent to Microsoft whenever a program crashes. Though hardly would you be instantly benefited from this service. SO might as well turn it off!
To do so, Click Start, type services, and press Enter. Find and double-click Windows Error Reporting Service. In the ‘Startup type’ drop-down menu, select Disabled, and then click OK.
