SMS, MMS and now SNS. SNS stands for social networking site which has reached the evangelical status among the netizens of the world. Almost one third of Chinese net users are member of these SNSs like Facebook, Orkut, hi5, renren etc. Recently these websites have succeeded in creating a new form of extreme online gamers who spend more than an hour everyday religiously. They have created online gamers cult which is the talk of everybody’s town. People discuss about it over a cup of tea, coffee and beer. The players have found a new topic to chat about and it has penetrated in almost all the countries regardless of the location. Social Networking games like FarmVilla and FishVilla are easy to play and you need not require a supercomputer like configuration like many other classic computer games. This unique and innovative strategy has helped this cult to reach people who could not play heavy computer games. SNSs have volumes which is the core requirement for a sustainable and scalable e-business model. Just wait and watch, how many games will bombard the internet in the coming years?
Morphie claims that the application would use the wireless connection of the iPhone to connect to the payment gateway. The launch is expected to be a part of the upcoming 2010 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.

The complete details of the applications are still unknown but it is believed that the application would be competing against another mobile phone payment app called Square, which is being developed by the co-founder of Twitter, Jack Dorsey.

Critics believe that the success of the devices would largely depend on the pricing of the apps and could change the way transactions are done in the future.

Twitter the micro blogging social network site, founded in 2006, has banned 370 words for security reasons. Words like 123456, porsche, ferrari, chelsea, arsenal have been banned and users cannot use it as passwords. They state that these common passwords increase the risk of hacking and phishing.

How did they get the list of these words?

Is it that majority of the 25 million users of twitter use these passwords? Or is it from a general survey done across all web based applications? How will it

help?

Better way to manage passwords:

Use Alpha-numeric-symbol passwords which would be extremely difficult to hack. If you find it difficult to remember such passwords, just draft a document wherein you have documented such passwords and mail it to

yourself. If possible encrypt it and document. e.g. use the subsequent letter for each letter and then save (instead of TWITTER save it as UXJUUFS). Just churn your brain and you can fight back hacking.

Password management is a new technique to remember/document passwords, which can be accesses anywhere and anytime. Think from the hacker’s point of view and trick them!

China, a communist country, started its economic turnaround with the concept of small organizations like Town and Village enterprises in the 70s. Many reports say that their infrastructure was the key to their miraculous growth. However, if we compare the infrastructure levels of India with that of China in early 80s, we find that the length of roads, expressways and railway tracks were all higher in India than China. During this period, China had only one resource called human resource or HR.

In the business cycle, all developed economies of the world have started with small innovations, developments and small organizations. Which grew by leaps and bounds with continuous improvement in process and technology. In the 90s, a general perception creeped in to the minds of people that Big is better and thus every country and organization competed with themselves to achieve the “Biggest Status”. Forbes list of richests, biggests and highests fueled this aspiration like a virus. Highest building, largest workforce, biggest company, largest plant, richest CEO and all sorts of permutation and combination.

Now, with the successful launch of TATA NANO (Smallest/Cheapest Car), TATA Swach (Cheapest water purifier: Threat to bottled water industry), micro financing products and other nano products, the “B” word seems to be dampening. TATA with its bottom of the Pyramid approach is poised to revolutionize the way world thinks. As C.K. Prahlad said in his theory that the real money is residing in with the people at the bottom. TATA is also planning to launch its NANO housing model where in people can get cheap affordable accommodation even during housing bubbles bursting everywhere.

In contrast Reliance has lived through its glorious days by building the biggest complexes and biggest chains. Very often people forget that every big thing is build on the platform of small products. Like the mobile revolution by Ambanis which made mobile affodable to every Indian from top to bottom of the pyramid. IBM is going small by targeting Small and medium sized companies. FMCG companies have experienced the growth by launching the smallest SKUs (shampoo/oil in Sachets).

You name the industry and you would realize that small is big. Is it the magical tool which communism invented centuries ago or is it the magical tool which capitalists are exploiting?

Rogues

Enterprise Resource Planning or better known as ERP has been the key IT Buzz since a decade now.Today every big company either has it or aspires to buy it. Why not? It is such a wonderful system that pressurizes the organization to adopt the benchmarked business processes. SAP being the leader in providing ERP packages, has gone through the entire business cycle and has developed key innovations. Considering the fact that small companies cannot implement ERP (because of the huge costs associated with it), cloud computing

is here again to help the resource scarce organizations. Today ERP can be implemented in two ways. One: In-House ERP software (traditional way) and Two: Through Application service providers (Cloud Computing way)

ASPs are organizations which rent ERP software to small companies. They have a central server which can be accessed through internet by the users. They also provide necessary training to the users. Usually they charge on per user basis or the number of transactions. On the other hand in traditional in-house ERP model, everything has to be bought and paid for by the user organization as shown in the diagram shown above.

Now the question arises, which one is better. There are three things (FIS) which should be considered before taking this crucial decision. One: Financial resources of the company, Two: IT expertise available in-house and Three: Strategic evaluation looking at your competitors.

One: Finance: It is seen that ASP supported ERP is almost 30% cheaper than the ownership model(over 5 years). However, your companies information lies at the ASP servers.

Two: IT expertise: A company which does not have strong IT infrastructure in the organization may spend a lot more in developing the expertise. The in-house model might also take a lot more time to implement ERP. Here the ASP model might be beneficial, because the risk associated with unsuccessful implementation is fraction of the former.

Three: Strategic Evaluation: If the concerned industry/competitor is growing fast and your forecast says that investment in infrastructure is key to sustainable growth of your organization, do not worry about the costs. Go for the traditional proprietary model of ERP implementation.

To sum up, now even a small company can reap the benefits of business process re engineering or the God like ERP!

Business to business marketing is a specialized field of marketing where the rules of the game is substantially different. Transaction between Microsoft and Dell can be compared to transaction between P&G and a consumer John, but to a certain extent. The level of trust and relationship is markedly different in the above two business transactions. The intricacies of trust and relationship in B2B transactions have been discussed in depth in a paper written by Shelby D Hunt. In the past decade there has been a paradigm shift towards relationship marketing and this is more evident in B2B segment. However, at the kirana store level the importance of relationship marketing cannot be neglected in a developing country. It is seen that the importance of this concept varies with the level of development in the society. The more developed a country the less is the importance at B2C level. In emerging nations where the systems are not well defined and where best practices are rare, adjustment and adoption to individual customers is been practiced since decades.

Business to business marketing is a specialized field of marketing where the rules of the game is substantially different. In emerging nations where the systems are not well defined and where best practices are rare, adjustment and adoption to individual customers is been practiced since decades.

With this background information, here i would like to throw some light on an interesting relation between human behavior and relationship marketing. Interaction and transaction among human beings happen at three levels:

one-With family members

Two-with friends

Three-with acquaintance

Let us explore the importance and consequence of relationship in all the three scenarios. At level one, humans compulsorily adopt to the family members needs and change involuntarily. If your wife needs some time, she need not take an appointment from you. At level two, humans adopt to the needs of their friends voluntarily. If your friend wants to meet you, you might change your regular appointment to accommodate your friends need. However, at level three, the chances that you treat the acquaintance differently are very bleak.

Now, let us explore these options for a business house.

level one: Big client without whom you cannot survive. Just like family members.

level Two: key clients whom you perceive to be better than other clients (in terms of business, process or growth prospects). Just like friends.

level Three: other clients

In level one, your client defines the way you work and can be compared to family members.

In level two, there is a mutual adjustment and you act as if they are your friends. You would change your normal business process wherever required.

Interestingly, at level three, you do business with other not so important clients and you act as if they are just acquaintance and you resist any demand in process change.

From the above comparison i conclude that a manager can understand its business better if he handles the clients as if they are family members, friends or just acquaintance.

“Three tier relationship management in business”.

U.S., U.K. and other developed countries like Japan were struggling to find the root cause. There is a wise saying, whenever something goes wrong look at the basics. What are the basics of economic prosperity? It is not a rocket science to divide the economic engines into Agriculture, Industrial and Services sector. Everything else come under these three pillars of economy. Finding the right balance is long term and playing with anyone is short term. It is evident that finding the right balance always takes more time than disturbing the right balance. A little push or pull in any one of the pillars would affect the entire set pillars. This is what happened everytime the world economy plunged.

However, there were few emerging nations which believed in basics of economics and regardless of the school of thought, sailed through the turmoil without toppling. India and China are among these few nations. India’s Q2 GDP growth at factor cost increased to 7.9 against the world trend. It is not surprising to see that this growth has been fueled by growth in agriculture by 1.9, Industry by 8.2 and services by 9.3. It is not that India has attained the perfect balance but it is going in the right direction. Pre slowdown India was promoted as a developing nation with the statement ‘India Shining’ and it was seen apprehensively by many. Post Slowdown again the numbers show that the shine factor has not diminished. If we try to do the SWOT analysis of India we see that their biggest strength is their population and the opportunity in services that they are exploiting goes well with their strength. Another reason for the shine factor is that the latent strengths make it sustainable. India’s large mineral deposit is still to be exploited at developed rates which would further increase the shine factor in future. Now, the threat which is bothering India is the shadow of towering debts around the world. The recent Dubai crisis and other such incidents might reduce the inflow of goodies which in turn may dampen the shine. One weakness which is acting as the biggest resistance to growth is the conflicts with its neighbors. Few years ago it had Pakistan, now it has China and Srilanka. These week links in the chain can be the biggest enemy of the shine factor.

Let us hope that the growth drivers of the world reach the balance soon.

Which country is the best to live in?

A survey from 2007 to 2009 in 135 countries by Gallups revealed that 16% of the worlds adult population would like to leave their home country for a country of their choice. This 16% converts to 700 million people and that is more than adult population of entire North & South America!

The most desired country was found to be US, Canada, UK, Germany, Saudi Arabia and Australia. Out of these 700 million majority would like to migrate to North america. Among the countries from where people would like to migrate, Africa tops the list along with other developing countries.

Why is this disparity between countries? Why does the grass on the other side seem to be greener always?

In this context we could say that the people from emerging nations aspire to live one day in a country as developed as US or UK. The IT/ITES revolution of this century have increased the awareness about what a developed country is all about. The standard of living, the ease of transportation and the predictability play major roles in setting a benchmark for choice of a country. People believe that sometime in future their country will emerge as a country of their dream. However, the waiting time for such transformation is huge in most of the cases. This urge of shortening the waiting time can be one of the reason for these 700 million to dream of switching the country.

Cloud computing eliminates the requirement of huge storage space for storing software and data at the user level. This technology works on a central server where all the major softwares are stored. Individual users can log on to there system and use the facility online for a monthly rent. Now a user need not update a computer every now and then to keep up with the software updates.

Interestingly, Microsoft office is available at around $2 a month to users all over the world. This $300 software which requires loads of memory is now available at fraction of its cost. The day is not far when you would not require an operating system in your computer. Just logon and explore the world at the fastest speed ever, and all that is legal. Is this the solution against piracy?
