How to get a seat in Top Colleges in India

IIM Seats.jpgCracking Exams like CAT and IIT is no joke in India. Here’s one way you can surely have an edge over the others. This is a story which many in India might have already faced. You meet this guy who is filthy rich or else rich enough to buy a cell phone worth Rs 10000($ 250). You don’t think he is a genius yet suddenly one fine day he tells you “Dude I cleared my IIMs and have got a seat in IIM Ahmedabad, one of the most elite colleges in India. You are happy for him thinking “Wow! This guy has brains “He must have really worked hard. But what you don’t know is the fact that his score was less than yours. Yet he made it and you didn’t even get a call for interview. And here’s how that happened.

He belonged to SC/ST or the backward caste. So for them the cutoffs are different. Moreover, they have a reservation of almost close to 50% of the overall seats in most of India’s institute. I very much favor giving everyone an equal chance. But on what basis should one decide whether one should be giving that extra care and attention. Note that this guy who made it was in no way underprivileged. He had loads of money and even was extravagant on his spending” Do you think giving him an advantage over you was fair? Few years from now he would be your boss ordering you to do things when you know you were a much worthy candidate and were much more intelligent that him. But just because he has the “Brand Name” of India’s top college, you do not stand a chance in front of him.

In fact there are many such cases of people who are very much financially sound ,yet they get their entire education free of cost, leave alone the fact that in some colleges they get paid by government for studying , just because they are so called “underprivileged”.

Cases of people changing their caste to “Backward Caste” just to get a seat in a college. I agree that there has to be equal opportunity in India for all but doesn’t this mean that in fact “there is no equality here”. It’s the people who belong to the general class who are in fact suffering?

Isn’t this one of the reasons that the top companies like Wipro , Satyam, Infosys of private sector does not have any reservations for anyone.

Now in what ways are they underprivileged is a question worth asking. Are they financially not sound? If so give them free funding and free food and house. Why should you have a lower cutoff at all? If they are worthy of a seat, let them slog hard like the rest 3, 00,000 people who try to get into the top colleges ( and never make it ) and let them earn their seats. In fact there are many people who belong to the general caste who don’t have enough money to feed their children. Now are they not underprivileged? Should they be getting the extra attention? Is having such a high percentage of reservation in India’s elite colleges fare. Shouldn’t the Indian government remove the reservations and in fact give them free funds for education rather than providing them with a “free seat”. Now that’s a easy way to get in IIT and IIM isn’t it?
